Using AI to Design Your Custom Shirts or Stickers? Here's How to Actually Get Great Prints
A No-Judgment Guide for Small Business Owners, Etsy Sellers, and DIY Designers
Published: August 2026
You had an idea. You typed a prompt into ChatGPT or Midjourney. You got back a cool-looking design. And now you want it printed on shirts, stickers, or transfers for your business.
Great. You're in the right place.
We print AI-designed artwork every single day. Some of it works beautifully. Some of it needs some love before it's ready for production. Here's what you actually need to know—no gatekeeping, no lectures about "real" design.
The Truth About AI Designs and Printing
AI-generated images are amazing. They let anyone create custom artwork without needing to hire a graphic designer or spend years learning Photoshop.
But there's a catch: AI images look great on your phone screen and terrible when they print—unless you know what to fix first.
The Common Issues: Low resolution. Checkerboard backgrounds instead of transparent ones. Weird text that can't be fixed. Colors that look different when printed. Files too small to print at real sizes.
The good news? All of these are solvable. And you don't need to be a graphic designer to fix them.
The 5-Minute Pre-Print Check
Before you send your AI design to us (or anywhere), check these five things. Takes 5 minutes. Saves hours of frustration.
1. Is the Image Big Enough?
Most AI images come out at 1024x1024 pixels. That's fine for a small sticker. Not fine for an 11" print on a shirt. If you're printing at real sizes, you'll need to upscale the image using a free tool like Upscayl or Topaz Gigapixel.
2. Is the Background Transparent?
If your AI-generated image has a checkerboard pattern behind it, that's actually TRANSPARENT. That's what you want. If it has a solid color background (white, blue, whatever), you'll need to remove it. Free tools like remove.bg work well for most designs.
3. Does the Text Actually Say What You Want?
AI can't spell. Really. If your design has words, look closely—they're probably gibberish. The best fix is to remove any AI-generated text and add real text yourself using Canva or a similar tool.
4. Are the Colors Print-Friendly?
Screen colors and print colors are different. Bright neon greens and glowing purples that look amazing on your phone might print muddy. If it looks unrealistically vibrant on screen, it'll probably print duller. Preview it in grayscale to see what you're actually working with.
5. Do You Have the Right to Use It?
AI-generated designs have some copyright weirdness. Generally you're safer with original AI art than trying to make AI copy famous logos, characters, or artists' styles. When in doubt, keep it original.
"But What About Real Graphic Designers?"
Look, we work with professional designers all the time. They're incredibly talented. If your business needs a polished brand system, complex logos, or bespoke artwork—hire a real designer. They're worth every penny.
But maybe that's not you right now. Maybe you're:
- Testing a design idea before committing money to it
- Running a small side hustle with a tight budget
- Making shirts for a one-time event
- Learning as you go
- Just having fun with a creative idea
AI tools let you do all of that without needing to hire someone or learn Adobe Illustrator. That's not lazy. That's smart.
The Simple Truth: The best design tool is the one you actually use to get your idea into the world. Whether that's Adobe Illustrator, Canva, ChatGPT, or a crayon—if it works for you, it works.
What We Do to Help
When you send us an AI-designed file, here's what happens on our end:
We look at it. An actual person checks your file before we print anything.
We flag problems. If your resolution is too low, if the background isn't transparent, or if we spot something that'll cause issues, we'll email you before running the job.
We suggest fixes. If it's something simple, we'll tell you how to fix it. If it needs professional help, we can do minor prep work or point you in the right direction.
We print it right. Once the file is ready, we produce it with the same quality standards as any other order—AI-generated or hand-drawn.
