What We Learned at the Big Custom Printing Show (And Why It Matters for You)
PRINTING United Expo 2026 Wrap-Up: What's Actually Changing for Custom Print Customers
Published: September 2026
The biggest custom printing industry show of the year wrapped up last week in Las Vegas. Hundreds of exhibitors. New equipment everywhere. Lots of announcements about what's coming next in DTF, UV printing, custom apparel, and specialty decoration.
You don't need the industry insider version. Here's what actually matters for anyone ordering custom prints in the months ahead.
Quick Version: Custom printing is getting cleaner, smarter, and more automated. Better quality control. Faster turnaround on complex orders. New options for premium and specialty prints. Good news across the board for customers.
Cleaner Production Is Actually Here
Traditional DTF production uses a fine adhesive powder that gets shaken onto every transfer. It works well but it's messy—the powder gets everywhere and requires air filtration in the shop.
New technology being demonstrated at the show eliminates the powder step. Instead, the adhesive gets printed directly onto the film. Cleaner shop, softer feel on the finished transfer, less labor per order.
What this means for you: Over the next 12-18 months, DTF transfers may get slightly better in feel and quality. Not a revolutionary change—but a meaningful improvement.
Automated Cutting and Finishing
Once transfers are printed, someone has to peel them off the backing, cut them apart, sort them, and prepare them for shipping. That's a lot of manual work—especially on larger orders.
New automated systems shown at the expo handle this work with machines. One system rated up to 480 garments per hour for automatic peeling. Another up to 580 per hour for unloading.
What this means for you: Faster turnaround on volume orders. More consistent quality (less chance of manual handling errors). And potentially better pricing as production becomes more efficient.
Smaller Equipment Getting Smarter
Even entry-level DTF machines are getting features that used to require expensive industrial equipment:
Cameras that automatically check for clogged printer nozzles
Automatic printer maintenance during idle time
Continuous white ink circulation to prevent settling
Automatic monitoring of ink and film usage
What this means for you: More small shops will enter the market with capable equipment. Quality will vary widely between operators—choose suppliers based on actual results and customer reviews, not equipment claims.
UV Printing on Hard Goods Keeps Growing
UV printing (the method for putting designs on tumblers, bottles, phones, and other hard surfaces) got significant attention at the show. Major manufacturers are investing heavily in this category.
What this means for you: If you've been considering branded drinkware, custom promotional products, or personalized hard goods, the technology continues to improve. Better durability, better print quality, more surface options available.
One-Stop Shops Are the Industry Direction
Multiple manufacturers used the show to promote broader equipment lineups—DTF printers plus heat presses plus hat presses plus embroidery machines. The message is clear: manufacturers expect small custom decoration shops to offer several methods, not specialize in just one.
What this means for you: Suppliers offering multiple product categories (DTF, stickers, apparel, promotional products) can handle more of your needs in one place. Less coordination between vendors. Faster overall project completion. Fewer things to keep track of.
Cheap DTF Pricing Isn't Going Away
The commodity end of DTF pricing has settled at around 2-2.5 cents per square inch in Arizona (and even lower nationally). Those prices are real, but they come with real tradeoffs—longer shipping, cut corners on materials, minimal customer service, and defect handling on your end.
What this means for you: If you need the absolute lowest price and can handle the tradeoffs, commodity DTF exists. If you need reliability, quality, and real customer service, service-focused shops (like us) exist too. Different customers genuinely need different types of suppliers.
The Big Picture
Here's what became clear from the show: DTF printing itself is becoming a commodity. What separates quality suppliers is everything else—the ordering experience, turnaround reliability, artwork help, product variety, and real customer service.
That's good news for anyone who needs a dependable supplier for their business. Shops investing in service and quality (not just cheap production) will continue delivering better results than commodity operations racing to the bottom.
Where We're Focused
Based on what we saw at the show, here's what we're investing in for 2027:
Better production workflow. Not faster printing—smarter overall production so your orders complete faster and more reliably.
New capabilities as they mature. Powderless DTF, expanded color options, and improved UV printing all showed real progress. We'll adopt what makes sense as it becomes practical.
Keeping what commodity shops can't offer. Real artwork help. Real customer service. Quality control on every order. Multiple product categories under one roof.
Honest guidance. Straight answers about what will and won't work for your specific project—not upselling you into things you don't need.
Practical Takeaways for Your Next Order
Consider the full experience. Reliability, service, and quality usually matter more than saving a few dollars per sheet.
Bundle when you can. Ordering multiple product types from one supplier saves time and coordination effort.
Ask about capabilities. If you need specific colors, materials, or fast turnaround, ask upfront what suppliers can actually deliver.
Choose suppliers investing in their operations. Shops staying current with technology produce better long-term results than shops running old workflows.
