Ordering Royal Blue Prints? Here's What You Need to Know
Why This Color Is Tricky—And How We Get It Right
Published: August 2026
You want royal blue on your shirts, stickers, or custom apparel. Sounds simple, right?
It's actually one of the trickiest colors to get right in custom printing. Order royal blue from ten different printers and you'll get ten slightly different blues. Some too purple. Some too dark. Some almost neon.
Here's what makes it so hard—and how we handle it so your prints come out looking the way you expect.
The Short Version: Royal blue lives in a narrow zone between navy and neon, between blue and purple. Small changes in the color mix cause big changes in how it prints. We've dialed it in over hundreds of jobs so you don't have to.
Why Royal Blue Gets Botched So Often
You've probably seen these problems before:
"Why does my blue look purple?" The color mix had too much red/magenta. Common with cheap printing.
"Why does it look almost neon?" Not enough dark tones. Looks electric instead of rich.
"Why does it look washed out?" Too much dark tone. The blue loses its brightness.
"Why does it look like navy?" Way too much dark tone. Not royal blue anymore.
All of these come down to the same problem: royal blue is a delicate balance. Get one part of the mix wrong and the whole color shifts.
What to Tell Us When You Order
Want the best chance of getting exactly the royal blue you're picturing? Here's what helps:
1. Send a Reference Image
The word "royal blue" means different things to different people. Send us an image showing the exact shade you want. Could be:
A photo of a shirt in the color you love
A Pantone color number if you have one
A screenshot from a website that shows the color
Even a link to a product page with that color
2. Tell Us the Fabric Color
Royal blue looks different on white cotton vs. black polyester. Let us know what garment you're printing on so we can adjust the color for that fabric.
3. Mention If It's for a Brand
If this is for a team, business, or event with an existing brand color, tell us. We can match specific brand blues (like sports team colors) as closely as possible.
4. Request a Sample if It's a Big Order
For orders of 50+ pieces where color accuracy is critical, ask about a sample print first. We'd rather do a small test than have you disappointed with a bulk order.
Pro Tip: Screen color and printed color are always slightly different. What glows bright on your phone will print a bit more muted on fabric. That's normal—the difference should be subtle, not dramatic.
What We Do on Our End
You don't need to worry about the technical color codes. That's our job. But here's what happens behind the scenes when we print your royal blue:
We look at your design file and check the exact color values
We adjust for the specific fabric you're printing on
We factor in whether it's DTF transfer or another printing method
We use our tested formulas that produce reliable, consistent royal blue
We check the finished print against your reference before shipping
Basically, we've done the frustrating trial-and-error part already so your order comes out right the first time.
Common Royal Blue Questions
"Can you match my team's exact blue?"
Usually yes. Send us the team's Pantone number or a reference image. Most sports team colors have well-documented Pantone values we can match closely.
"Will my royal blue look the same on white and black shirts?"
Very close, but not identical. Royal blue on white pops more vibrant. On black, it looks slightly darker/richer. We adjust the mix for each fabric to keep the color as consistent as possible.
"My design has bright royal blue on screen. Why does it print duller?"
Screens use backlit light (RGB colors). Prints use ink or transfers reflecting ambient light (CMYK colors). There's always some difference. What matters is that it still reads as "royal blue"—not that it perfectly matches the screen glow.
"What if I don't like the color once it's printed?"
Tell us right away. We'll work with you on a solution. For small color adjustments, we can often reprint. For major color mismatches, we take responsibility if we missed the mark.
The Bottom Line
Royal blue is one of the most requested colors in custom printing. It's also one of the most commonly botched—especially by cheap or overseas printers who don't take the time to dial it in.
We've built our reputation on getting colors right the first time. That includes royal blue.
Send us your design, tell us the color you're picturing, and let us handle the rest.
