What's Changing in Custom Printing (And Why Your Next Order Benefits)
Big Industry Show This Week — Here's What Actually Matters for Customers
Published: September 2026
The biggest custom printing industry show of the year opens this Wednesday in Las Vegas. New equipment, new technology, and new capabilities will be unveiled all week.
You don't need to follow the industry drama to benefit from what's happening. Here's the practical version of what's changing and why your next custom printing order will be better because of it.
Quick Version: Custom printing is becoming smarter, cleaner, and more capable. Better colors. Cleaner production. Faster workflows. Good news for anyone ordering DTF transfers, custom stickers, apparel, or promotional products.
Better Colors Are Coming
Standard DTF printing uses four basic ink colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) plus white. Those colors can reproduce most things—but not everything.
Certain colors have always been tricky: royal blue, bright orange, vibrant pink, teal, and specific brand colors. They print duller than what you see on your screen. That's a technology limit, not a shop mistake.
New DTF printers are adding extra colors—Sky Blue, Pale Pink, Orange, Green, and other options—that fill in the gaps. The result is closer to what you actually designed.
What this means for you: Over the next 6-12 months, expect suppliers to start offering premium color options for brand color matching and vibrant designs. Especially useful if you have specific brand colors that always seem to print wrong.
Cleaner Production Coming
Traditional DTF production involves powder—a fine adhesive powder that gets applied to every transfer, then shaken off. It works well but it's messy, requires air filtration, and adds labor to every transfer.
New technology being demonstrated this week eliminates the powder step entirely. The adhesive gets printed directly onto the transfer instead. Cleaner production, softer feel on the finished transfer, less labor per unit.
What this means for you: If this technology proves out in real production over the next year, DTF transfers may get slightly better in feel and quality while remaining affordable.
Automated Cutting and Finishing
Once transfers are printed, someone has to cut them, sort them, and prepare them for shipping. That's a lot of manual labor—especially for shops selling individual transfers rather than full gang sheets.
New automated systems being unveiled this week handle this work with machines instead of manual labor. Faster processing. More consistent results. Better quality control.
What this means for you: Faster turnaround on orders that require individual cutting. Fewer errors from manual handling. And potentially better economics that get passed to customers over time.
Specialty Materials Are Back
DTF is great for full-color designs at reasonable prices. But sometimes you want something that stands out visually in ways standard DTF can't do.
New specialty materials are hitting the market—dimensional heat transfer vinyl with pearlescent finishes, light-shifting metallic effects, and other premium looks that basic DTF simply can't replicate.
What this means for you: If you have a project that needs to look distinctly premium—brand identity work, event merchandise, high-end retail products—there are more options than plain DTF or standard vinyl.
Why Cheap DTF Isn't the Whole Story
You've probably seen ads for DTF gang sheets at very low prices. Some as low as $1.75 per square foot.
Here's the reality: typical DTF production costs about 2-3 cents per square inch when you factor in ink, film, powder, labor, electricity, and equipment. Some advertised prices are below actual production costs.
Those numbers only work through overseas production, cut corners on materials, or minimal customer service. Sometimes all three.
What this means for you: Cheap DTF is real. It also has real tradeoffs—longer shipping, weaker materials, defect handling on your end, no real customer service. Choose based on what you actually need, not just advertised price.
The Big Picture
Custom printing is going through a real shift right now. DTF printing itself is becoming a commodity. What separates quality suppliers is everything ELSE—the ordering experience, color capability, artwork help, product variety, turnaround reliability, and real customer service.
That's actually good news for small business customers who need someone dependable. It means suppliers who invest in service and quality (not just cheap production) have real reasons to exist—and can deliver better results than commodity operations racing to the bottom.
What We're Doing About It
We stay engaged with what's happening in the industry so our customers benefit. That means:
Watching new technology closely. If powderless DTF, expanded color, or automated finishing prove reliable, we'll adopt what makes sense.
Continuing to invest in what commodity shops can't offer. Real artwork help. Real customer service. Quality control on every order. Multiple product categories under one roof (DTF, stickers, apparel, promotional products).
Being honest about what's possible. Straight answers about what will and won't work for your specific project.
Practical Takeaways for Your Next Order
Ask about brand color matching. If you have specific colors that matter, ask suppliers what they can currently deliver and what's coming.
Consider bundling products. Suppliers that handle DTF, stickers, apparel, and promotional products together save you coordination time.
Choose suppliers who invest in capability. Shops that keep up with technology produce better results than shops coasting on older equipment.
Don't just chase the lowest price. The full experience—reliability, service, quality—usually matters more than saving a few dollars per sheet.
