Ordering Custom Sun-Protective Shirts? Here's What to Know
Custom UPF Apparel Made Simple for Outdoor Workers, Teams, and Small Businesses
Published: August 2026
Living in Arizona, we know sun protection isn't optional. Neither do our customers who work outdoors, run outdoor events, or spend their weekends fishing, hiking, or camping.
If you're thinking about ordering custom sun-protective apparel—shirts your team, business, or event can actually wear in the sun—here's what you need to know.
Quick Version: Sun-protective shirts are rated by "UPF" (similar to SPF for sunscreen). Higher numbers block more UV. We print custom designs on quality UPF apparel with DTF transfers that hold up to sun, sweat, and washing.
What UPF Actually Means
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It tells you how well a fabric blocks UV rays from reaching your skin.
Simple breakdown:
UPF 15-24: Good protection (blocks 93-95% of UV)
UPF 25-39: Very good protection (blocks 96-97% of UV)
UPF 50+: Excellent protection (blocks 98% of UV)
For reference: a regular white cotton t-shirt only blocks about 80% of UV rays. That's why people burn through their shirts on long outdoor days.
Arizona Reality Check: If you or your team are spending hours in the Arizona sun, UPF 50+ is worth the extra cost. Regular cotton isn't going to cut it.
Who Actually Needs UPF Apparel?
Custom UPF shirts make sense for a lot of situations:
Outdoor work crews: Landscapers, construction workers, roofers, delivery drivers, warehouse crews with outdoor exposure.
Sports teams and outdoor recreation: Fishing tournaments, golf teams, running clubs, cornhole leagues, hiking groups.
Event staff: Anyone working outdoor festivals, sporting events, farmers markets, weddings, or corporate outings.
Small business owners: Realtors doing outdoor showings, food truck operators, mobile service providers, anyone whose "office" is outside.
Kids and youth sports: Especially important since kids get most of their lifetime UV exposure before age 18.
Do Custom Prints Affect UPF Protection?
Common question. Here's the honest answer:
The UPF rating comes from the shirt itself, not the print. When you put a DTF transfer on a UPF 50 shirt, the fabric under the design still blocks UV. The design itself just adds another layer.
What this means practically:
Your team's logo on the back of a UPF 50 shirt doesn't reduce protection for the wearer
Large designs (like a full back print) actually add extra coverage in that area
Small chest logos have zero impact on the shirt's protective rating
The rest of the shirt (sleeves, back, front) continues protecting as designed
Which Fabrics Work Best?
Here are the common options for custom UPF apparel:
Polyester Blends (Most Popular)
Usually UPF 30-50. Moisture-wicking, breathable, affordable, and durable. Works well for most work and team uniform applications. Good balance of price and performance.
Performance/Athletic Fabrics
UPF 40-50+. Lightweight, quick-drying, designed for active use. Great for sports teams, outdoor athletes, and anyone doing physical work in the sun.
Sun Shirts / Fishing Shirts
UPF 50+. Specifically designed for extended sun exposure. Popular for outdoor recreation brands, fishing charters, and desert work environments.
UPF-Treated Cotton
UPF 15-40 depending on treatment. Softer feel of cotton with added protection. Works for casual outdoor wear where all-day comfort matters more than maximum protection.
How to Order Custom UPF Apparel from Us
The process is straightforward:
Step 1: Tell us what you need. How many shirts, what environment they'll be used in, and what design you want on them.
Step 2: We recommend the right blank. Based on your budget and use case, we suggest specific UPF-rated shirts that work for your situation.
Step 3: Design approval. We create or refine your design and show you a mockup before printing.
Step 4: DTF printing. We apply your design using DTF transfers that hold up to sun exposure, sweat, and repeated washing.
Step 5: 48-72 hour turnaround. From artwork approval to shipping, typically within three business days.
Not Sure Which Shirt? Just tell us what you need. Working outdoors 8 hours a day? We'll recommend UPF 50+. Occasional outdoor events? Maybe UPF 30-40 is plenty. We help you match the shirt to the actual use.
Care and Longevity
To keep your UPF shirts protective through their full lifespan:
Wash in cold water to preserve fabric fibers and the UPF treatment.
Skip the fabric softener. It can coat the fibers and reduce UPF effectiveness.
Air dry when possible. Extends fabric life and preserves protection.
Replace shirts that stretch out or fade. Damaged fabric = reduced protection.
DTF transfers on UPF apparel typically last 30-50+ washes when cared for properly.
Common Questions
"Do I need UPF 50+ or is UPF 30 enough?"
For all-day outdoor exposure in high-UV environments (Arizona, Florida, high altitudes), go UPF 50+. For occasional outdoor use or shaded environments, UPF 30 is usually enough.
"Can you print on any UPF shirt?"
Most UPF apparel is compatible with DTF transfers. If you have a specific brand or shirt in mind, send us the info and we'll confirm compatibility.
"Does color affect protection?"
Yes. Darker colors block more UV than lighter ones. But dark colors absorb heat, which matters in Arizona summers. Most quality UPF shirts use fabric treatments that let you get good protection in lighter colors too.
"What about wet clothing?"
Regular cotton loses about half its UV protection when wet. Quality UPF apparel is designed to maintain protection even when wet or sweaty. Important for fishing, water sports, and hot-weather work.
